Chelsea should have killed the game in the first half- Tuchel

Wed Apr 28, 2021
Thomas Tuchel regrets that Chelsea didn't manage to kill off their semi-final first-leg tie against Real Madrid during a dominant first half at Valdebebas. The Premier League side were well on top and had chances to build on their one-goal lead before Karim Benzema levelled with 30 minutes played. "We should have won it in the first half," Tuchel said to BT Sport. "We were unlucky and we lacked [a clinical touch] in the Real Madrid box. "We defended quite well and that's the story of the game. We believe in ourselves and in what we need in order to play a high-level match. "We should have won it in the first half, we had chances to decide the game. We've come into this after another very demanding match and it would have been good to have had another day of rest. "Now we have a day off and we're going to enjoy it. Not even winning here would have allowed us to take the second leg for granted and we know we have to fight for everything." The German continued to discuss his side's setup and admitted to being surprised by Zinedine Zidane's decision to play with a back five. "I knew they had used the 5-3-2 before, but we prepared for the game thinking they'd play 4-3-3, which is what they had done the most," Tuchel said. "But they changed the system and when I saw their team before the game, I had a quick talk to adapt and to change some things in defence."
